The challenge
APESAU's time and attendance team handles attendance, leave, vacation and comp time by hand, with information scattered across different systems and spreadsheets. It needed to know where AI could lighten that load and where to start.

Our solution
We applied our AI Opportunity Map: an analysis of the operation that shows where AI makes sense, what impact it can have and where to start:
- A discovery session with the time and attendance team
- Analysis of real operational data shared by the team
- Proposals ranked on an impact-vs-cost matrix, with the assumptions behind every estimate in plain view
- Ideas we evaluated and ruled out, with the reason for each
- A clear recommendation on where to start
- The map delivered digitally, ready to explore without a walkthrough meeting
The result
- Concrete opportunities to apply AI to time and attendance
- Proposals that work without changing the existing HR system
- A clear way to decide what to tackle first and what can wait
- Clarity on where AI doesn't belong, such as decisions that affect an individual
- Measure, not predict
- Predicting each person's absenteeism looked like the obvious proposal, but we ruled it out: a prediction you can't explain isn't an acceptable basis for a decision about someone. Instead, we proposed measuring what has already happened, and measuring it well.
